Akeredolu appointed son to siphon Ondo resources – Peretei, PDP Publicity Secretary

Posted by on November 28, 2021 0

Kennedy Peretei is the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State. In this interview with PETER DADA, he speaks about the current administration of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and the state of the opposition in the state

T he PDP seems to be silent in Ondo State, failing to play the role of the main opposition. Is the silence due to the alleged crisis in your party?

There is no time we have been silent as a party in the opposition. We have consistently pointed out the direction the activities of government should go in the most constructive manner. Also, to answer your question on crisis, I will like to tell you that there has been no crisis of any kind in our party. Yes, there may have been divergent interests leading to the 2020 governorship elections, but that never snowballed into what can be referred to as a crisis. Like you are aware, we just returned from the national convention, which was a huge success. We are ever more resolved to rescue Nigeria and reposition it for greatness.

You have been attacking the Akeredolu-led administration over its performance in the state. Is it because the opposition parties don’t see anything good in the administration of the ruling party?

We are not attacking Akeredolu’s government; we are just telling him that since 1999, there have been governors in Ondo State. There is a minimum benchmark of performance that is expected. But the APC government has fallen far below expectation. We are drawing his attention to these failures so that he can correct himself. Is it our press statement against the increase in tuition fees in tertiary institutions that is an attack? Is it the ruin of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic? Is it the stoppage of the Free School Shuttle Buses which parents and students enjoyed for more than six years under our administration? Is it the Mother and Child Hospitals that provided free medical services to pregnant women and children below the age of five that have all turned out to be mere consulting clinics? Is it the pulling out of more than 150 medical doctors from state’s employment due to poor conditions of service? What we expect from him is to better the lives of the people, not to ruin everything he met on the ground.

You recently kicked against the appointment of Akeredolu’s son as the DG of a new agency, the Performance and Project Implementation Monitoring Unit. What is really your grouse against the governor’s action?

The appointment of Akeredolu’s son as the DG of PPMIU is the greatest affront and the misrule of Aketi. What is the cognate experience of this young man? Where has he ever worked? The literal implication of the appointment is that he is in charge of all contracts, purchases and the entire government financial architecture, including monitoring of projects, which is the statutory responsibility of the Ondo State House of Assembly. It is a ploy to take hold of the state treasury and drain it. It is wicked, misplaced and an unpardonable abuse of his office as the Governor of Ondo State. This is not the first time; we have also said it that recently, Babajide (Akeredolu’s son) was reported to have brought another consultant to take charge of forestry operations in the state. This appears that Mr Governor and his immediate family are bent on living fat on the lean resources of the people at a time when poverty has taken over the land, walking in all four legs. So, everything is wrong with the appointment. The government said because other governors appointed members of their immediate families into office, Akeredolu could do the same. Can you imagine this kind of senseless narrative?

What do you think he should have done in that regard?

Akeredolu should have chosen from the long list of professionals who worked for his election and pick one of them, instead of attempting to reduce Ondo State to his fiefdom. All these have shown that it is the greed of the first family that is being fed and it is no longer their needs. Akeredolu, his wife and children must realise that the resources of the state are given to them in trust for the people and they should remember that the day of reckoning is very near.

How is the preparation of your party ahead the forthcoming bye-election and the general elections, considering the internal wrangling among the party members in the state?

There is no internal wrangling. We are waiting for the guidelines for the bye-election. Once the Independent National Electoral Commission gives a date, we are good to go. We are seriously preparing for the elections and we are sure of coasting home to victory. In the last governorship election, we won in Akure North and Akure South Local Government Areas where the bye-election would be held. The APC is aware that it is very weak in the two local council areas and the government appreciates this fact too.

What have been the efforts of the leadership of PDP to resolve factions in the party?

Where are the factions? There is only one executive committee working for the success of the party. The fact that during the zonal congress in Osogbo, all Ondo State delegates did not vote in the same direction does not amount to having factions within the party. As I told you, there is no crisis in our party

Now that former Governor Olusegun Mimiko has come to join you again, how do you think this development would help the party in resolving its challenges?

The return of former governor, Mimiko, to the fold will be an advantage to the PDP. He is an experienced politician who has the capacity to add value to the party, not only in Ondo State, but in the entire South-West and the whole country.
