Awoniyi hopes to carry momentum to Conference League

UNION BERLIN striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, says he’s hopeful the team can take the momentum of their 2-0 derby win over Hertha Berlin to the UEFA Conference League when they tackle Israeli side Maccabi Haifa on Thursday.

The Nigeria international was on the score sheet as Union defeated arch-rivals Hertha to take his Bundesliga goals tally to eight in 12 games and 13 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

The next test for the Germans is a Conference League match-up against Maccabi Haifa at the Sammy Ofer Stadium.

Despite their impressive form in the league this season, Union has failed to transfer their impressive display to the continent as they currently sit bottom of Group E with just three points.

The team have lost three of their four matches and are on the verge of crashing out of the competition unless they win their last two group games.

However, Awoniyi hopes they can take the form of the win over the weekend to the continent.

“We’ll take the victory with us to Haifa,” Awoniyi told the club’s website

“It doesn’t matter who scores. For me, I score so that the team can be successful. Once we are successful, I think I’m happy and I’m glad about that.”

The 24-year-old has been named the Bundesliga’s Matchday 12’s Man of the Matchday.

Union currently sit bottom of the log behind Feyenoord, Slavia Prague and Maccabi Haifa.
