The Kano State Police Command has arrested a suspected social media fraudster, Aliyu Salisu.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, in a statement on Monday, said a report was received on November 9 from a woman, Yelwa Shandam, that a Facebook user with the account name, Aliyu Hussaini Salisu, advertised some textile materials on his page.

“She ordered 14 different textile materials at N100,000 and delivered the money through Unguwa Uku Motor Park, Kano. But instead of sending the materials, he packaged rags and tattered mosquito nets and sent to her,” the statement added.

Irked by the reported fraud, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Dikko, reportedly ordered a team of detectives, led by one DSP Mutari Dawanau, to comb the metropolis and arrest the suspect.

The PPRO said, “The team promptly swung into action and at the end of the day successfully arrested the 25-year-old suspect at the Unguwa Uku Motor Park, Kano.

“The suspect, who was caught in possession of a laptop computer and a mobile phone, was in the process of defrauding another victim.”

He said during interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he specialised in using WhatsApp and Facebook to advertise textile materials, collecting people’s money and then either blocking their social media accounts/phone numbers or sending them rags.

The suspect allegedly confessed to defrauding about 37 people from different parts of the country, especially women with a passion for designer clothes.

Kiyawa said, “Shortly after his arrest, 37 persons lodged complaints that the suspect defrauded them of the sum of N1,014,000. The suspect was today, November 22, taken before the Senior Chief Magistrate’s Court 26, Ungogo Kano, for prosecution.”
