THE Katsina State Elders Forum has sought the deployment of additional men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to help tackle insecurity in the state.

The forum members made the plea during a courtesy visit to the NSCDC Commandant -General, Dr Ahmed Audi, in Abuja, on Monday.

Chairman of the forum, Alhaji Amadu Maradin, said members of the group were concerned about insecurity in the state, hence their appeal to the NSCDC boss.

Maradin, who was represented by Senator Abba Ali, stated that he cared about the well-being of Katsina residents and admonished the CG to ensure peace and security across the country.

He said the insecurity in the state was affecting agricultural, economic and other activities in the state.

The forum’s Secretary, Alhaji Aliyu Sani, said collaborating with the corps to acquire more civil defenders in the state was of priority to the group.

Another member, Justice Saddik Mahuta, who is the Galadima of Katsina, revealed that the state government was set to recruit about 3,000 vigilantes to complement the efforts of the NSCDC.

“We are up and doing in complementing the activities of security agencies in the state. We urge you to provide logistics for your personnel in the state,” he said.

Responding, the civil defence boss acknowledged the forum’s request, noting that he would consider their plea.

He stated, “Your coming is significant because, as elders, even if a child climbs an iroko tree, he can’t see afar. Agro Rangers is a specialised unit that has the function of giving security and protection to farmers and other agro-allied areas.

“We have posted to farms and we will do more. We have received approval to recruit more personnel after the budget is passed next year. They will be trained and posted to states as the civil defence is doing its best to ensure the successful end to this crisis.”
