W’Cup qualifiers: Ministry handling D’Tigers, not Ahmadu-Kida

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development will be in charge of the D’Tigers to the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers first window in Angola instead of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, The PUNCH reports.

D’Tigers are billed to face Cape Verde, Mali, and Uganda at the qualifiers billed to hold from November 26 to 28.

This comes after world body FIBA had ruled that it would only recognise the Musa Ahmadu-Kida-led board of the NBBF.

FIBA in a letter addressed to Ahmadu-Kida, said the sports ministry does have jurisdiction to manage the affairs of a National Member Federation.

“As you are aware, under Article 9.7 of the FIBA’s General Statutes, National Member Federations must manage their affairs independently without the influence of third parties and ensure that their officials are elected or appointed under a democratic process.

“Also, Article 9.1. a. requires NMFs to “maintain full control and governance of basketball in their country, including without limitation, control over their national competitions.

“Please be advised that FIBA will not recognise any competition or result that stems from an event not controlled by the NBBF,” FIBA’s letter read in part.

However, according to a top source in the sports ministry who spoke to The PUNCH on the condition of anonymity stated that the team which will be coached by Julius Nwosu who played a season with the San Antonio Spurs in 1994/95 was being managed by the ministry.

“The ministry is in charge of the team for the competition, as things stand, they are the ones funding the team so they are in charge.”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the sports ministry had set up a task force to run the affairs of the NBBF and handle D’Tigers pending when an election is held.

This had necessitated the sports ministry writing to Ahmadu-Kida to hand over the national teams’ kits in his possession, a request he rebuffed.

The PUNCH also reported that FIBA had given the NBBF and the sports ministry to put its house in order and conduct an election into the federation’s board before January 30.
